Course 1: An Introduction to Sexual and Gender Identities

This course has been designed to give you a general introduction to sexual and gender identities, key points in the history of gender and sexual rights, and the issues that these minorities face, including unequal access to education, health and legal protection. It should make you more confident when discussing these issues in the future.

Read more about what you will cover in this course, below.

Course overview:

You will start this course by learning about the distinction between gender and sexual identities and how communities have petitioned for recognition of sexual and gender identities.

In the second section of this course, we will discuss notable points in the history of the LGBTQI+ community, including prejudices that have shaped perspectives on gender and sexual minorities and how the community has attempted to reframe these perspectives.

You will then have an opportunity to learn more about the issues LGBTQI+ members face across the globe, including persecution and the restriction of rights across the globe.

At the end of each of the three sections of this course, you will be presented with a selection of reflective questions related to each topic. At the end of the course there will be a short quiz to test your understanding, and a further selection of reflective questions. You will earn a certificate of completion once you have successfully completed this quiz and final reflective task.

Your commitment:

This is an online course that you can take at any time. It should take approximately six hours to complete. You will be able to log out and continue where you left off at a later time.

Feedback on the course:

“I thought the course covered a range of topics and I loved the level of depth and the variety of examples given. Lots of variety in terms of the presentation of information e.g. videos, quizzes etc...which makes it inclusive of different learning styles.”
