On the 11th of April 2026, several people were attacked and assaulted in the Shahbagh district of Dhaka, the country's capital city.
Throughout the group of attackers, homophobic slurs and hate speech were chanted, with victims being targeted because they were assumed to be ‘queer’.
The women in the group were also subjected to sexual harassment, and their clothing was pulled off.
Police were eventually pressured to record the incident and those who were attacked were taken to hospital for proper medical treatment.
Sadly, this attack is not an isolated incident and instead is a part of a broader pattern of discrimination and violence faced by queer communities worldwide.
This event highlights how deeply entrenched prejudice can still manifest in public spaces and underscores the urgent need for stronger legal protections to ensure the LGBTQ+ community can live safe and openly.
Drew Dalton, CEO of ReportOUT, said, "We remain committed to reporting LGBTQ+ Human Rights issues from around the world and invite you to join the fight for a safer, more equal society for LGBTQ+ people everywhere.
"As an organisation, we long for the day such incidences are a rare occurrence, better yet, unheard of. "
