The 200 Queers Hike Adventure

ReportOUT’s very own Cynthia Njue joined Diversified Kenya recently for an afternoon of wellbeing as part of the 200 Queers Hike Adventure. Read on to find out more about her experience.

I was casually scrolling on Instagram Wednesday afternoon when I stumbled upon an intriguing post by Diversified Kenya. They called it the 200 Queers Hike Adventure. For just about $15, you got access to a rainforest hike trail, scenic views and a picnic spot, all with the company of fellow queers. Let’s just say I never bought a ticket that fast in my life!

Diversified Kenya is an LGBTQ organization that creates a safe and inclusive environment and resources for those who need it most. The organization was founded in 2022 and remains passionate about empowering LGBTQ individuals to live without fear of discrimination or prejudice.

For the 200 Queers Hike dubbed 200QH, Diversified Kenya had partnered with Queer Wellness and The Traveling Wakili, who are familiar names within the LGBTQ community. The Travelling Wakili is a queer-inclusive travel service run by a beautiful young Kenyan woman (pronouns they, them). Queer Wellness is an LGBTQ art wellness community that continues to provide self-care therapy to hundreds of queer individuals in Kenya.

Enough background information. Sunday arrived, and it was time to get hiking. The vibes were very fun but sustainable. We packed rainbow merchandise, snacks, water, and hiking gear. As soon as we were settled in the buses and ready to leave for the forest, you could feel that this was a more welcoming and intentional crowd. How could it not be when this participant, Drew (they/them), brought a baby’s breath bouquet and handed everyone a flower for having a good bladder on the trip?

To sum it up, it was an afternoon of panting, walking on all fours to avoid sliding back down a steep slope, skinny dipping in a dam, and spotting a rainbow in the sky when it was all over. And, I cannot go without mentioning the charismatic Tarrique, who taught everyone amazing choreography and turned us into pro dancers in half an hour.

In the era of outright criminalization of LGBTQ relationships and violence, and discrimination against LGBTQ individuals, such spaces are a breath of fresh air. We love gay/lesbian clubs but we absolutely stan sober and intentional LGBTQ interaction such as the 200 Queers Hike.

We didn’t even mind getting rained on! Best believe I will spread the news so more people find out about the adventurous LGBTQ community that is Diversified Kenya.
