Meet Our Volunteers: Emma

For Volunteers Week 2020, we thought we would introduce you to a few of our volunteers so you can find out more about them and what they do!

"Hi my name is Emma Louise Aggar and I am a Social Scientist, Social Researcher and Academic Tutor. I have a HEFC diploma in Health, a BSc Hons in Health and Social Care and an MA in Social Science Research Methods; all of which have helped equip me with the tools to investigate subjects that I am passionate about and are very close to me. As a married pansexual, I often come up against people who struggle with my identity as my orientation supposedly conflicts with being monogamous with the opposite sex. However, as a very interesting conversation with a friend of mine recently highlighted so eloquently: just because a person is single for 15 years does not mean they are not still straight/lesbian/gay. Something that resonated with me and I keep coming back to for an easy explanation.

I’d like to think I’m a driven person, not in the least because of my complete 180 degree change of career choice from working as a Canine Hydrotherapist to a Social Scientist, but also in my own little way (or what others would consider an Odd way); I tend to face my fears straight on. Unfortunately, this does not always bode well as I here and now present myself with 21 tarantulas in my office as former Arachnophobe. Nevertheless, whilst I understand some people would be a little spooked by that statement, I would go so far as to say that all of my experiences have only helped flourish my ability to passionately delve into the face of inequality, highlighting the disadvantage, abuse and fear that SOGI people face... and likewise stare down the metaphorical and literal monsters in the (8) little eyes."
