Meet Our Volunteers: Caroline

For Volunteers Week 2020, we thought we would introduce you to a few of our volunteers so you can find out more about them and what they do!

"I’m Caroline. I’m Irish, a feminist, an LGBT activist, an MSc International Development student and I take as long in the shower as it takes to rap the first three songs in Hamilton (yes, I do all the different parts). Ever since I first realised I was gay, I’ve been passionate about LGBT rights and activism. Seeing my home country legalise gay marriage in 2015 made it hit home how much legislative change can impact the LGBT community, and how much difference it can make to how it feels to be an LGBT person in a country.

I’m currently at university in Edinburgh, finishing my Masters in International Development this summer. While trapped in my house full time, I’m writing my thesis on universal and non-discriminatory healthcare for LGBT people in South Africa, and I’m doing the research in collaboration with an organisation in Cape Town. I love the research aspect of my degree, and am passionate about LGBT identities and rights around the world, so knew I wanted to volunteer at ReportOUT as soon as I heard about it.

As a Human Rights researcher with ReportOUT, I research the human rights of LGBT people in sub-Saharan African countries and then write country profiles. My favourite part of doing this research is finding out what kind of LGBT movements and resistance there is in countries where LGBT people face so much opposition, and are often criminalised.

For me, one of the best parts of being involved with ReportOUT is how much progress I can see the organisation making over a short period of time. Since I joined in January, there have been multiple different campaigns to get involved with, and lots more projects still to come. It’s really motivating to see the impact we’re making, and I’m excited to see where it goes from here.

So, if you need me can find me at my computer, researching LGBT rights – or maybe doing my best Hamilton impression, waiting for the talent scouts to come knocking."
